Usually it’s the other way around. With you asking when he’ll be done with his work, but in recent days, you’ve been all too occupied. And whenever you are free, you’re always with someone else.
Still you make an effort to be in his presence, as you silently do paperwork in his lab. He begs himself to be content with watching you from the corner of his eye; he doesn’t want to seem overbearing to you. But eventually, he gives in.
“Love, would you like to rest with me?” he asked softly.
“Ah, sorry, let me just finish this stack and I’ll be right there,” you replied in an apologetic tone. You expected him to go off to rest first but he just pulls up a chair next to you and sits down.
You watched intently as he let’s you rest your cheek on the palm of his hand. “You’ve been busy.”
“Have I?” you blinked.
“I’ll finish the rest of the paperwork for you later,” he said. “So just come with me, please.”
You could never reject him if he says it like that, especially since his arms are way more comfortable than the wooden chair.

“You’re going out again?” he squinted, forcing his eyes to peel open as they fought to shut in exhaustion.
“I’m going to have brunch with Keqing and Xiangling remember?” you replied, pulling on your socks.
His face fell. “Again?”
“I won’t be back till dinner because I have some papers to submit. Do you want anything for takeout?”
He clambered out of the comforts of his blanket and placed his hands on your waist, his brows crinkled. “Can’t you just stay today?”
When you reject the idea, he practically starts whining, still half asleep. At this, you just snort and try to pull away.
It was helpless.
“Fine, stop begging, I’ll cancel plans,” you finally relented, making his mouth spread into a wide smile.
“Let me just get changed back into-”
You didn’t have a chance to finish your sentence because he was already dragging you back to the comforts of your bed.

He couldn’t believe it. Him? Kaeya? Lonely? Absolutely not.
But with you away at some 3 week commission, how could he possibly fulfill the cold empty side of the bed at night? So by the end of the second week, he’s at the tavern.
Unbeknownst to him, you arrive early from your commission.
When you don’t find him at the house, you go to the headquarters, then finally, you resort to the tavern where he’s drunk out of his mind and spouting random things to Diluc who simply appears irritated.
You quickly apologize to Diluc and attempt to haul Kaeya out of the tavern, but when he sees your face, he clings onto you like his life depends on it.
“Ah! This is my beloved, have I told you Master Diluc?-”
“Yes, you’ve been talking about them all day.”
Eventually you manage to stumble out of the bar with him slung around your shoulder. And he’s drowsy now, smiling mindlessly.
“I missed you, don’t leave like that again, please.”
Then he passes out, leaving you flustered.

He doesn’t want to seem possessive. He’s afraid he’ll scare you away otherwise.
So first, he tries with smaller questions.
“How was the stuff you’re busy with today?”
“It was okay, but I think I’ll be a bit busy for a while.”
He thought it would be a couple days, not weeks. Eventually, even the great Master Diluc can’t handle it.
You come back home one day and he’s asleep. Back in the dining room, there’s a gazillion dishes and wines that suit your taste, your plants are watered, and your paperwork is all completed and stacked neatly.
So you smile and return to Diluc, kneeling to peck his forehead. “Thank you, love.”
And hours later, when you’re snuggled beside him, he finally wakes up and gazes down at you in relief.
“I missed you,” you beamed up at him.
“I missed you too.”

He notices the longer absences you take from your visits. When he goes to visit you, you’re often not there.
When he asks you about it, you explain that you’re just occupied these days. He doesn’t like the idea of it, but what can he do?
He visits you more often in hopes of catching you on your way in or out, but fate seems to be against him.
He can’t believe a mere mortal is having such an effect on him, but instead of being irritated, he visits more.
One day you come back to your house late at night, and he’s just on your couch fast asleep.
The scene is adorable cause he looks at peace when he’s sleeping. Especially cause he was waiting for you here for so long.
You just plop down next to him, and he awakes immediately out of instinct and it makes you grin widely. “How long were you waiting for me?”
“Waiting? No, I wasnt…” he grumbled, very clearly averting his eyes.
“Oh, you must not know because you were asleep-”
“Adepti do not sleep!”
You just laugh. “Thank you, Xiao.”
