Silent Gazes

Xiao x Reader
With the lull of customers at Wangshu Inn, you can’t help but notice a certain Yaksha missing
  • Could be read either as platonic, romantic or platonic going romantic
  • Birthday Fic for our Yaksha
  • I wrote this at 2:30 AM and yes his gift is the best.
  • Word Count: 666 (It’s not on purpose I swear)

“Ver? Have you seen Xiao anywhere?”,

The lull in customers coming in today gave you a bit of free time from your job as Smiley Yanxiao’s assistant chef. Realizing that the presence of the Yaksha couldn’t be felt anywhere near his usual place troubled you a bit.

“He came back here after a walk around but went out again right after, hasn’t he talked to you?”, Ver askes.

Talk…was a bit of an overstatement considering that Xiao rarely utters a word with you but a simple gaze with each other communicated a lot between you two. You felt giddy knowing that you can tell Xiao’s mood by just locking in each other’s silent gazes, despite him looking angsty all the time to outsiders, i.e Paimon.

“No, haven’t seen or felt him around”, You answer back, Ver puts her fingers underneath her chin thinking where the Yaksha could have been. As she was about to suggest something, a high-pitched voice calls out to you and Ver.

“Hi Ver, we finished your commission! Oh! Sous Chef! Hello to you too”, You giggled at the nickname you have gotten from Paimon and gave a wave of your own and also greeted the Traveller.

“We just encountered Xiao on the way here and he wanted to give this to you”, The Traveller said and pulled out a small bag and a familiar looking Almond Tofu from their small pack or as you and Paimon like to call it, The Pocket Dimension. “Xiao wanted you to have this”, as the Traveller gave you the presents, which you gingerly accept, Paimon also pulls out a letter that wasn’t properly sealed.

“Now a letter from Xiao, would you like for me to read it for you or would you rather savor this in private?”, Paimon asked her face donning that usual teasing look. You shook your head feeling heat creep up to your cheeks, they had witnessed one of your ‘conversations’ with Xiao and everytime Paimon sees you, she can’t help but tease you a little.

“I think I shall read this by myself but thank you for offering”, You tried to avoid the knowing gaze of Ver as you took the letter from Paimon’s tiny hands and went to the very top of the Inn where you and Xiao often could be found together.

You arrived just as the wind was gently blowing in, you felt the presence of the Yaksha in his usual place: at the roof of the Inn looking down below to watch the humans go by. Setting down the Almond Tofu or Sweet Dream rather on the small table that Huai'an had put here one day. You opened the letter and read the letter silently in your mind and you can’t help but smile as the contents.

“Xiao…”, You called out gently and the Yaksha appeared in front of you, just like he says in his letter, speak his name and he shall come to you. You gestured towards the vacant spot next to you and Xiao, surprisingly, complied without any complaints. Pulling out one of the crystalfly cores in the bag and held it out to Xiao.

Despite keeping a straight face, the tips of his ears were burned a bright red and that tugged the corners of your lips into a smile. Xiao took the crystalfly and tried to find a way as you put it in your hair as you enjoyed the Sweet Dream he gave you.

“There was nothing for me to do today. So, I decided I would find a Crystalfly for you - to put in your hair. I thought that…it would look nice.

The next thing I knew, I several more than I intended. I hope you do not mind. If you wish to mee me, speak my name. I do not care much for birthdays and celebrations, and I do not wish to be around large groups of people.

To be able to spend some time you with is enough.”
