———————————————————————

adeptus days were long.

day after day, xiao would defend the citizens of liyue, because that was his duty.

you often accompanied him on his missions, and would also wander to mondstadt every once in a while, paying a visit to barbatos- no, venti.

the only person who knew you were an adeptus other than the other adepti and the archons, was diluc.

diluc often had to deal with an extremely drunk venti, along with you appearing out of absolutely nowhere to haul venti back to the apartment you had rented for him.

mora. what an interesting system.

recently, xiao hadn’t felt very burdened. he was confused as to why, considering he was cursed for all eternity to feel the weight of his former fellow adepti’s deaths.

he hadn’t even realized your sudden decline in health. after morax decided to suddenly ‘retire’, liyues needs rocketed upwards, leaving the adepti to help out.

and so, he thought you were just stressed over the new state of the nation.

little did he know, something much, much worse was happening.

one night, he came back to wangshu inn to find you sitting on the railing of the balcony.

he set down his polearm, and waved his mask away, hopping over the railing to sit next to you.

your eyes had significant eye bags, and even now you seemed half asleep.

“xiao?” you whispered, giving him a quick glance.

“what is it, [name]?” he replied, scooting closer to you.

“you know how you’ve been feeling better recently?”

xiao was confused. “yes, what about it?”

you turned your body so the railing was in between your legs.

“i’ve been taking your karmic debt.”

xiaos eyes widened. “and you haven’t done anything with it?!” [name], that’s fatal, you can’t just-“

you silenced him with a raise of your hand.

“i made a deal. if i house your karmic debt to the end of my life, the burden will be lifted off your shoulders.”

a tear rolled down xiaos cheek. “but that means…”

you smiled sadly. “i die tonight, darling.”

xiaos hands clenched tight, anger seeping through him.

“why would you do such a thing?!”

“you were struggling,” you replied, “i had a chance to change that.”

and so, you gave him one last kiss, hands holding the sides of his face, desperate to hold him just a while longer.

and then you let go.

you toppled off the balcony, falling towards the ground. xiao desperately reached out, fingers just barely skipping through your clothes.

by the time xiao made it to the ground where you should’ve fell, all that was left were your robes. it was as if you had disappeared into thin air.

xiao fell to his knees, pawing at your clothing.

‘yet another patch of clothing i have to wear.’
