Xiao had known for a while now, that man— Zhongli, as they call him nowadays, recently has a certain person of interest occupying his mind as he speaks…It was surprising for the young adeptus to say the least. To think that the god still holds such humane taste, that there was still someone who could entertain him, despite his many years full different encounters. His fascination with you had Xiao confused on as to why this said god was acting as if he hadn’t encounter anyone quite like you in his lifetime before.

Your background was simple yet sweet and your story was one that was just beginning to unfold just in time for both Zhongli and Xiao to witness. A tale of a hard-working woman who lives with her lovable grandparents in Qingce Village. You reached an age where you can freely roam pass what you have known as home and into the harbor itself, using that opportunity to find work and earn money for your remaining family. Your frequent visits in city of Liyue was what led you to meet Zhongli by sheer coincidence alone, during a story-telling performance in Third-Round Knockout that you just so happen to be interested in. Zhongli, being a usual at this convention had took note of you as a new audience amongst the few people he had encountered.

Perhaps it was the fact that you were so different from the usual audience that caught his eye at first glance. All he ever met was old townsfolks joining in to reminiscent about the past, maybe some young archeologists, historians that requires the knowledge for their profession, but you fell to none of those categories. You were just an audience, young and youthful, eyes glittering and heart beating fast at the climax of the story, as evident of how tight your grip was on that cup of tea. You looked incredibly out of place within this area that Zhongli couldn’t help but be amused of your reactions. It was always a guilty pleasure of his to see the youth of today so marveled at what happened back during the old times.

But what seemed to be an adorable little encounter for him turned out to be something much more when he overheard something that wasn’t intended for anyone to hear. “Bringing order, huh…” You whispered to yourself, unaware of how keen the ears of the man beside you are. “…I wonder if that’s just an excuse for Rex Lapis to do as he pleases with whoever is in the side of the contract…”

Zhongli couldn’t help himself; he had devoted on staying quiet of the truth regardless of what the citizens may think, but when one hears their past name, they just can’t help but to be curious themselves. “…The contract was created for the sake of balance and reason.” His mouth moved without his permission, eager to state nothing but facts to somehow change your perception on the current topic. “Rex Lapis did not find enjoyment in carrying out order to those who break the contract, but is merely carrying the will of the rock that does so.”

It was silent after that and for that few seconds, Zhongli almost regretted the thought of speaking up, seeing that you were now staring up at him with wide eyes, frozen in place. People used to tell him that he lacked the ability to “read” the atmosphere which always had him confused in thought, but the air that day was particularly awkward, making him understand little by little on what that expression meant now. With a small cough to clear out the thick tension, he set out to turn to you and apologize for your breaking your immersion, but—

“Aah, is that so? I guess thinking that way does makes more sense in a logical perspective…” You put your hand on your mouth, thinking deeply in thought at what he said. Zhongli watched as you mumbled out a few more words that managed to slip out of your mouth, but held insufficient context for him to understand. Soon, you stopped your little self-deliberation and held a laugh for yourself, ones that made him raise his eyebrow in wonder. “Silly me, always thinking of such scary things…Of course, Rex Lapis is not that kind of god after all.”

You then turned to Zhongli, which he had noticed that your eyes had shone brighter than before, almost as if stars itself was what resided in them. “But that thought had always been in the back of my mind for a while now so, I guess a little criticism was the push that I needed to get it out.” Your smile was just as bright as the light in your eyes, he took a mental note how full of warmth and innocence it has. “I’m glad you took the time in seriously correct me, sir! Thank you!”

Ah, so your little pause was not because you were offended by his rude interruption, but it was you taking his words into careful consideration to align them with your own opinions…Zhongli slowly smiled, you are as strange as he expected you to be. Perhaps you are as similar as the historians that have gathered in this place, a young woman who wanted to know more about a time that she did not partake in. But instead of knowledge alone, you were simply having fun learning about it. “Well…It was my pleasure.” Zhongli said as he closed his eyes, he thought it was a good trait to have— Whoever said you needed to have a professional degree in order to have the right to understand and learn about the past anyway?

“But you sure do seem to know a lot, sir! Better than the common folks around here, at least.” You indulged the conversation this time, an attempt that was way better than what he did. “Please, I’m intrigued! Would you mind if you were to tell me more?”

Perhaps deep in his heart, Zhongli still holds a softest spot for humans like you, who possess avid curiosity, willing to know more and such. You reminded of him of those children from Chihu Rock, gathering around an adult to tell them stories about the heroic deeds of those who were able to survive the harsh lands that is the past. It wouldn’t be too far off if Zhongli were to say that you were probably like that a few years earlier, it was just a trait that never disappeared from you even after reaching adulthood. “…Very well.” He agreed, without a single doubt of hesitation in his mind and watched as you lit up with delight. It was yet another entertaining reaction that he had enjoyed, however— “Though we will be in need of a contract.”

At that instant, you’re face fell and your excitement turned into worry. Zhongli almost felt bad dropping the huge news on you like that, he wasn’t sure if he liked this concerned side of you. “O-Oh, well…Would it cost Mora after all…?” You said as the tone of your voice settled down, as if the idea you had before didn’t seem to look as bright with a mention of a contract.

…Zhongli felt like he phrased the condition of a contract incorrectly, your mood changing was something that he did not expect. He suddenly felt obligated to cheer you up, seeing you so worried had somehow tugged on his heartstrings. “Oh, don’t misunderstand Dear…” A lovely pet name, you noticed he had used all of a sudden, but you more or less did not mind. It somehow brought you some comfort. “A contract does not always involve a placement of Mora.”

“Instead, the currency that we are going to talk about here is time.” Zhongli smiled, a soothing smile that slowly took your worry away, like how a parent does to their scared child. “The contract will go like this— I will be willing teach you more about the past as you requested, conducted during weekends at this same place for as long as you want during those days…But In exchange for that, the contract requires you to participate in it every time.”

You blinked in disbelief. “…Is that it?”

Closing his eyes, Zhongli felt victorious on the fact that he had successfully calmed you down in a near scared state. “This contract is only made for the both of us to not waste time, you see.” This was said for your own benefit rather than his. Time is nothing valuable for someone like him after all. “What point would we reach if you were to not show up at your own request, yes?”

It took you a while to come in terms with such an easy contract, still in disbelief that you were able to acquire something like it to the point of suspicion. Zhongli’s lips fell into a straight line at this, the change in demeanor within the mentions of contracts was very noticeable. The reason your guard was instantly raised up, how wary you are of the conditions had him thinking that some way, some how, you must’ve had bad experiences with contracts from before. It might be a stretched-out assumption, but you might’ve been scammed before, judging from the over-suspicion you give…Zhongli wanted to click his tongue if that were the case, people like those are a stain to his name as the god of contracts, what would they even gain from deceiving an innocent woman such as you?

“That’s…surprisingly— an easy contract, I don’t know what to say…” Your hands began to fidget together, slowly looking up at him with a hopeful look in your eyes. Somehow, Zhongli felt as if his heart was melting at the sight of it. “…It doesn’t really involve any Mora, right…?”

“Yes. You can have my word for it.” Zhongli nodded, a sincere gesture that captured you immediately. He feels bad that he had to offer a contract even through such simple terms as this, but he of all people knows better than to ignore Liyue’s tradition. Granting you favoritism would bring the order of contracts meaningless now, wouldn’t it?

You finally took a deep breath. “Well then…!” You exclaimed, excitedly. “Please take care of me!”

It was funny, how you both began to converse with each other so casually without registering the fact that the two of you hadn’t even learned each other’s names. It was as if the two of you were both old-time friends, words came out naturally after the agreement. You were a secluded child from what Zhongli could tell, your fascination with history had made sense after knowing that it was your grandparents who raised you. Having only their own experience to share with you as a guide, it was probably the one that sparked your interest. For once, Zhongli found that refreshing about you, that you were now depending on him to learn more just motivates him to do his best in fulfilling his side of the contract.

Having been the one to serve the mighty Morax for so long and experiencing his overall change altogether, Xiao can somehow see why he would be this easily attached to you. “She possesses innocence that I couldn’t help but to protect.” It was no excuse, no lies for he didn’t need to. Zhongli always tells the truth about his feelings whenever he would ask him about you. He was not the type to openly admit such a thing, but it was pretty obvious that this once powerful, war-obsessed god was now deeply smitten by a simple, curious village girl.

“She’s like a flower that continues to bloom beautifully despite the storm raging ahead.” Oh, how times have changed, Xiao could only think as he listens to the god’s musings. If he didn’t know any better, his words that are akin to poetry would’ve been mistaken for that of the Anemo Archon’s. However, he was once again reminded of his usual stern identity when he had begun to drop the flushed demeanor. “However, if there comes a time that I am not there to protect that bloom once that storm indeed decides to rain upon her…”

“…Then, I would like to ask of you to protect her in my stead, Xiao.”
