Side Effects of Visions part 2/7 - Pyro

Known Pyro vision holders: Amber, Diluc, Bennett, Klee, Xiangling, Hu Tao, Xinyan, Yanfei

Pyro, or the element of fire, is known for symbolizing passion, determination, and intention, among other things. As far as the game has shown, most Pyro visions have been bestowed upon their users in severe situations. Sometimes, death has been on the line. The determination to reach their goal, the passion to pursue what’s dear to them- that’s what makes a Pyro wielder who they are.

  • Right off the bat, everyone knows that a Pyro user will have a naturally high core temperature. Rosey cheeks and burning skin are natural features of each user, as well as blood that nearly boils.
  • Pyro is the most brutal of all the visions in terms of immediate side effects. Those who aren’t accustomed to the heat will burn their hands if they attempt to hold the vision. Anyone who visits Dragonspine or Snezhnaya will quite literally give off steam if they stand out in the cold. And while their skin is very warm, their internal temperature would shatter a thermometer. Once, when Bennett sustained a deep cut on an adventure, the blood that dripped from the wound bubbled and steamed as it hit the ground. This is another reason his Adventure Team abandoned him- they all thought he must be possessed by a demon.
  • Most Pyro users have to keep their hair short or tied back, because it would singe and burn up if it rests against their body for too long. That, or their elemental skill or burst might singe their hair if they’re not careful. Amber only gets away with loose hair because she fights with a bow, and Pyro-infused arrows aren’t kept particularly close to flammable materials.
  • Actually, Klee is one of the youngest vision holders to receive a Pyro vision in Mondstadt’s history, beating even Diluc, who received his at age 10. Klee’s body was still small and weak when she was first given her vision, and it didn’t fare well with her at first. Her core temperature dangerously high, which caused seizures, as well as fevers that lasted for days on end. When Klee received her vision, it was in a moment when she was about to die- her Pyro vision saved her from the explosion. But her saving grace nearly ended the life it saved. After battling weeks of dehydration, spontaneous 2nd degree burns, and heatstroke, the little girl finally recovered.
  • Pyro users are actually advised not to use paper or wood items. Paper burns up at the slightest touch, and any unstained wood will start smoking without warning. Yet another reason Benny’s Adventure Team abandoned him.
  • Finding a place to sleep is probably the worst part. Down feather beds or cotton beds go up in flames for any Pyro user, and anything that won’t burn is too hard. Xiangling and Bennett both learned to appreciate sleeping out in the open, partly because they’re always travelling, partly because the cool ground is the only thing that won’t singe the moment they get comfortable. Klee actually loved visiting Albedo in Dragonspine because she was able to curl up with him at night and keep them both warm, while not having to worry about burning up another blanket.
  • Pyro vision holders don’t sweat. It simply evaporates off their body before they can actually accumulate any sweat.
  • The Adventurer’s Guild usually sends Pyro vision holders to Dragonspine for commissions, since they’re the only ones who can tough out the cold long enough. Sheer Cold will down them eventually, but their core temperature wards off the biting cold longer than other Allogenes or non-vision holders. However, because of the stark change from extreme hot to extreme cold, Pyro wielding adventurers have to practice a transition. Dropping Bennett or Xiangling into the Entombed City without warning will most likely give them hypothermia.
  • The reason most Pyro vision holders tend to work or travel alone is because they always, always burn people. The first time Amber and the Traveler bested a camp of hilichurls together, she proudly patted them on the back. They recoiled in pain when Amber realized she’d left an angry, red handprint on their shoulder blade
  • Actually, the dangerously high core temperature has another detrimental effect. Over time, the nerve endings in the body are scorched, losing their function. Adventurers with Pyro need to be especially careful when going on dangerous missions, because they won’t be able to feel any pain. Multiple Knights of Favonius have been shot, stabbed, or lost fingers or parts of their ear without realizing, and they likely wouldn’t realize if not for the red streaks running down their armor. This is one of the effects that worsen with time, actually, and older Pyro users are advised not to adventure or serve the Knights because a deep gash to the stomach may go unnoticed until they’ve died from blood loss.
  • Subsequently, this applies to taste buds too. The reason Xiangling can handle such spicy food (pyro slime condensate, anyone?) is because she can’t taste anything that’s anything less than extremely spicy.
  • Instances of Pyro users going to the extremes just to feel some kind of sensation have been recorded, with self-inflicted wounds and attacking dangerous foes being the most common solutions. Partnering with Electro users tends to aid the situation, since their element affects the body on a deeper level (resonating mostly within muscle tissue), but alas, once the nerve endings are destroyed, sensations only become duller and duller until they can’t feel anything anymore.
  • Pyro users have to be particularly careful when using their elemental burst, since the move tends to channel most of their heat into a single attack. When first learning how to use his burst, Diluc set more than a fairshare of the vineyards ablaze.
  • Swimming is also atrocious for Pyro wielders, since the water will get so warm so fast, that it’ll burn anyone and anything that’s in the water. Amber stopped playing in Starfell Lake when she accidentally boiled all the fish swimming around.
  • Once again affected physical sensation, Pyro users are isolated from the rest of society in a very unique way. Humanity relies heavily on touch- through hugging, hand shaking, and so on. Physical touch ranges from formal to intimate, and it’s deeply ingrained in most cultures, and the nations of Teyvat are no exception. Pyro users cannot touch other people due to how easily they’ll burn them. Additionally, dead nerve endings means they don’t feel anything the longer they possess their vision. In short - Pyro users are touch starved and it can easily drive them mad
  • The effects of Pyro visions are fairly immediate and enduring. So, the lives of Pyro users aren’t hindered too terribly much, as long as they practice caution and control. Losing control of their power is what may ultimately kill them, however. Too many Pyro users have pushed their bodies too far, overheating themselves, burning themselves from the inside out. Every drop of fluid in their body evaporates, and as their skin and tissues dry out, they continue to burn and shrivel until they’ve passed the point of no return. This is why the Knights feared for Klee, since burning to death from the inside out is thought to be one of the most painful ways to die.
