a bad day can be good if i’m in your arms

Bennett x Fem! Reader

- to my dearest friend @childespersonalsimp - i hope this makes you feel better, even if it’s just a teensy weensy bit :)

It’s raining, like always whenever Bennett’s got a good feeling about the day. Still, through the downpour he maintains tenacious and the excitement in his tone and aura is never faded, and somehow, his excitement fuels you up, too. You’re one if not the only person who is always ready to join Bennett in an adventure, despite all the unluckiness the befalls you two. You are just as tenacious as Bennett, and where’s the adventure if everything is so easy?

Bennett is a great leader and who needs a healer if you have a Bennett, anyway?

“I wonder what we’ll find today!” Bennett skips through the grass, as if it wasn’t raining heavily. He’s a good meter or so ahead of you, lest you stand two close and end up struck by lightning.

Being a hydro user, the rain cold doesn’t bother you anyway. In fact, the rain keeps you alive, the thrumming in your heart pulsates with each drop that caresses your skin. “Be careful,” you call out to him. “I don’t want you to fall–”

Too late.

Smack bang, face first, right into the mud. You sigh. It was kinda expected, anyway. Bennett laughs as he got up and flicks off the mud that coated his arms. “It’s a good thing you’re carrying the bags!” he laughed. Despite the fall, the cute bb’s excitement didn’t falter. One of his many unique traits that you absolutely adore. His tenacity outmatched everyone else’s. “Where are we headed to this time?” he grins.

“We’re in Windrise, right now, so…” You’re tempted to hand him a tissue but it’s raining and it’s practically a shower anyway. “How about we go to Dadaupa Gorge? I heard there’s a hilichurl camp that’s been set up.”

“All right! Onto adventure!” He starts skipping off in a random direction and you just stand there with a judgemental look.

“Wrong way.”

He spins around. “I knew that.”

it’s a timeskip

The hilichurl camp was much more than a camp (it was practically an army), and the two of you were left with fighting them all. Plus those damn abyss mages made it worse. Thank god your trusty leader healed you and beat the shit out of them. Despite his unluckiness, you actually found yourself much safer in his team than anyone else’s.

It’s still raining yipee as the two of you trudge back to Mondstat. Your shoulders ache from all the weight in your backpack. Bennett had offered to take it from you but you gave him one look and told him no. You weren’t an asshole. How could you ever live with yourself if you put more strain on his injured body? Like always, the idiot went ahead and disarmed all the traps, the pits of fire and the hilichurls’ training equipment while you snuck in, cloaked within a water flow (courtesy of Mona teaching you that neat trick), and swiped all the treasure. Mind you, Bennett took all those hilichurls, abyss mages and mitachurls down, AND he healed you, too.

This kid, really. You shake your head as the two of you wade through a small river. “I want a hot chocolate,” you mutter.

“Me, too!” Bennett grins. “I like mine with marshmallows and oreo bits, too! Oh! Back when I was a kid, my dads would…”

His tenacity is infectious and as he rambles on about fond childhood memories, the world doesn’t seem so bleak and dull in the rain. In fact, the rain glows like crystals around the two of you and you go back and forth, making your way through the world side by side.

Kathryn is impressed, yet again, by the amount of treasure you pile onto her desk. You and Bennett beam and high-five as she guesses the amount you made. She says it will take to exchange it all and sends you to the church to get treated.

Though, despite the high of adventuring burning inside of you, Barbara had other things to say as the two of you trudge into the church, dripping with water and blood. She shrieks, complains about how you’re dirtying the place. Bennett laughs and sheepishly rubs the back of his neck, apologising. You bow and offer your apologies as the two of you sit down on one of the many benches. Bennett does a good job at patching you up, like always, and you try your best but ultimately fail while you try to patch him up.

He won’t outright admit it but Bennett enjoys the way you attempt to fix him up. Your fingers are gentle as you clean the blood off his cuts and you treat him with the utmost gentleness. It’s unusual but he won’t say anything about it. Instead, he’ll shut his eyes and lean forward as you dry his hair with a towel you always conveniently have in hand.

Then you’re kicked out once again once the rain has subsided and the two of you head into the house you rent together. The fire pit crackles with life and you’re laying on the couch. The armrest behind you gives you a sort of elevation. “Y/N, it hurts.” Bennett dons a pout as he stumbles into the living room. He flops right into your open arms, when prompted, and drags a blanket over him. He sighs happily.

His body hurts and his muscles ache yet he is used to it all, but if he has to complain to be in your arms and be comforted by you, he’ll complain all night long.

You watch the adventurer below, hands unable to help themselves. Your fingers work wonders, running through his hair and brushing the damp strands away from his face, so tender on the lightly tanned skin despite all the work you do. It’s silent, and only the crackles of the fire can be heard.

Maybe Bennett is unlucky, or maybe he’s used up all his luck by being able to have you by his side?
