So given that the Traveler teamed up with Zhongli for initially non-violent tasks, they might not have known he was a skilled fighter until the hilichurls attacked them in Daduapa gorge, so I’m imagining that Traveler does the protective step in front of him, and he’s like, “I appreciate the gesture, but that won’t be necessary,” and proceeds to help them kick ass.

Could have made a fun cutscene.
