There are two types of colour: apparent colour and actual colour. Apparent colours – the colour of the sky, the sea, sunlight on earth, shadow on flesh or any object in light – always imply within themselves the victory of the colour they present over all other possible colours. Somewhere in the blue-black of a night sky there is a vanquished red, a vanquished green, even a vanquished yellow. We have to create this vibrancy not separately in each colour we apply, but through the relationship one to another of the colours we use on each canvas. In terms of colour we have to transform depth into breadth.
