Never yield to remorse, but at once tell yourself: remorse would simply mean adding to the first act of stupidity a second. If we have done harm, we should give thought to how we can do good. If we are punished for our actions, let us endure our punishment with the feeling that we are thereby already doing good: we are deterring others from falling victim to the same folly.
