A Bat Among Us

I read this story where the batfam plays among us where Bruce can’t kill his kids (Family Game Night by LilliputianDuckling on AO3, go read it!!! It’s adorable!!!) and I get it, but consider this instead:

Bruce doesn’t have a problem with the game. It’s just another type of simulation to him. He doesn’t like thinking about his kids dying, but he can set it aside the same way he sets aside the idea of them getting hurt when he needs to spar with them. He knows he’d never actually do something like that, so there’s a disconnect.

No, Bruce isn’t the one who’s affected by the game.

Jason is.

Bruce might not be able to imagine wanting to hurt his family, but Jason’s already been down that road. The idea of sabotaging and hunting down his family members, it hits too close to home. Especially in Tim’s case. And the idea of being an imposter, some foreign entity wearing the skin of someone they trust. Being Jason Todd, but not the Jason Todd that everyone knew and cared about…

Jason doesn’t think anything of it at first. He’s thrilled to play and makes all kinds of jokes about killing off the others when someone suggests playing it during a family game night. He spends the first few games huffing when he keeps getting picked as crewmate. Then it’s finally his turn. He fakes a few tasks then ends up alone in electrical with Tim and he just… can’t do it. He goes to track someone else down and ends up in the reactor with Dick, but he still. Can’t. Do it.

He’s come so far. He’s not the person who stormed Titans Tower and slit Tim’s throat.

He knows it’s stupid, but something in him whispers that if he presses that button, he’ll be right back where he started.

He goes the whole game without killing anyone or even so much as opening the sabotage menu.
