As Seth followed Pandora into the cafeteria, he caught sight of a good chunk of their crewmates already present for lunch, huddled together at one table. As soon as the duo stepped into the room, they all began making hushed noises.

Pandora frowned. “What are they doing?”

“Probably jusst ssocializing, Pandora,” Seth answered, but he couldn’t help but feel uneasy. It couldn’t just be coincidence they’d started talking like that, right? And they kept stealing glances at him and his partner…

Well, he was the first mate. Gossip or not, it was his job to keep on top of things. He began to step closer, intent on demanding to know what was happening.

Then he caught Clover hissing a word that made him stop in his tracks.

The four of them burst into fresh giggles, and Seth blinked. Had… had he heard that right?

Then Pi repeated the word, a little louder.

Yeah. Yep. Okay. He sighed heavily, shaking his head in disappointment. He might expect this from Clover. Maybe Pi. But somehow, they’d managed to rope Friday and Hirohito into the little game, and they looked absolutely delighted to be there.

Well, as childish as it was, he wasn’t going to spoil their fun. At least, not until they got loud enough that they were in danger of Raphael hearing. Seth knew he should put a stop to it, but… this was the happiest all four of them had looked in days.

Pandora tugged on his arm, and he flinched. He’d forgotten she was there.

“What are they doing?” she stage-whispered to him.

Seth pinched the bridge of his nose. “They’re… playing a game,” he replied wearily. He was very intimately familiar with it; his younger siblings had been quite partial to it. Somehow, the hushed parroting of the vulgar word was making him yearn for home.

“How do you play?”

Right, Pandora hadn’t really… had much of a social life, had she? “Oh, you jusst… ssay the word louder than the lasst persson,” he explained, “and the persson who ssayss it loudesst before ssomeone tellss the lot to knock it off iss the winner.”

Pandora thought a moment. “Ohh. I get it. Like this?”

Seth’s eyes went wide, but it was too late.

Not ninety seconds later, Raphael and Ningyo were rushing into the cafeteria, demanding to know what all the fuss was about. In the middle of five delightedly cackling crewmates, Seth buried his red face in his matching gloves.
