ch1- how do you break into a shuttle?
Not many people got to leave earth. It had slowly over time
become dark. the sunlight seemed to have a barrier around it. stopping most
light from coming through.
with that… plants, animals and people slowly began to die off.
the population took a dip. And then it had slowly come forth from the distance.
A glowing moon, far away… but with each year, it came closer and closer.
No one know how these events happened. But with every event, another one sparks. And the governments around the world began to take children of the streets. Teaching them how to build, repair and wire ships. Space crafts that could lead us to our salvation.
But those, like me, could volunteer. It had been a swift
choice after leaving high school and the teaching had taken me ten years. But even
then, that was one of the quickest times to finish my course.
I had apparently picked it up like a duck to water.
The days did pass fairly luckily since launch the only light
came from the glowing ones above. Sometimes the suns or stars gave the place a
warm glow.
But sometimes things did seem to just be artificial. Save for the few plants I had
been aloud to bring on board. A few succulents and sprouts that would be easy
to maintain.
a small potted aloe remained at the end of my small bed.
The small ship seemed almost cramped in the cabin rooms. The walls
were lined with what looked like shelves with thin blankets on them, the
heating made each room warm.
each person had a designated cubby hole. The shutter on the front was the only
way for privacy much to our dismay.
It would be another day until we got our own separate rooms on
the larger ship with all the other crew members. But I wasn’t too bothered about
that.
there were ten of us here. And around fifty on the main ship.
There was a flashing red light above my bed however, it was Repetitive and bright. I wish I could have broken it… alas, I would be the one to repair it.
I pulled the sheet down and looked around the small cubby. A few
books sat at the back of the bed, propped up by the aloe as mentioned before,
but a few mini plants sat next to the bigger one. I made a small mental note to
water them later.
maybe one day I would be able to plant them on another planet… that sounded exiting!
anyways… I grabbed the folded uniform and helmet that sat by my pillow.
Pushing the shutter open and swinging my legs down and sliding
out, I looked around at all the other crewmates waking up at the ridiculously early
time.
each one of us looked around at one another, trying to see who decided to have
an emergency meeting so early.
“where is green?” someone asked, all eyes turned to the empty
spot.
ah. Yes, that would be the one then.
code names had always been a pain. But it made it easier to not remember everyone’s
names and just use codes instead. I, for example, am yellow. Each colour coded
us to our jobs.
green was navigation and yellow was electrical etc. We each had our jobs to
learn before coming here at the station. each day was long and full of new
things to learn. And only those who were able to could come this far. I had
been surprised to say the least.
and soon we were to be on the main ship everyone had jokingly called ‘the mother
ship’. The main hub of human space activity. Hsa for short.
“well, does anyone know where he may have gone?” dark blue
asked.
“lets try the meeting room? You know, where the emergency button is,” I responded,
rolling my eyes as I attempted to get into the plastic jumpsuit
“oh,” dark blue responded blushing in embarrassment.
It didn’t take too long for everyone to get into their colour coded suites, helmets placed under arm or at least in hand. blue and pink walked next to each other talking excitedly to one another.
aqua and lime walked out of the opposite room with white and
black.
they had to be separated due to apposing genders.
I had been categorised with the guys despite my lack of pronouns in the first
place. No one had made a fuss about it much to my own surprise.
The halls that lead to the meeting room were bare, a light
grey, save for the coloured stripes running down the middle of the walls acting
as a director to all the different sectors.
spending a week on this ship had been hard. With only ten people to talk to it
had been difficult to find common grounds.
one thing they could all agree on was that they missed their planet slightly. But
I couldn’t say that as much.
I’d barely had anything there. not earthly connections had made it an easier
transition to space compared to everyone else who would only be able to see
their family via radio conversations or video calls.
It did make things lonelier, but I didn’t mind…
The door to the meeting room opened as we arrived. the meeting
room was also what we called the cafeteria.
green stood in front of the cased red button. Black and yellow stripes lined
the case.
Green stood looking up at all of us as we entered and took our
place around the table.
“bad news. I just got news from the station to say that our ship was infiltrated
last night. we don’t know where they are… be on guard,” green said staring at everyone
in the eyes.
Everyone looked around at one another no one seemed safe from the suspicious glances, not even me. Well… looks like it would be a while until we reached the ship.
“well, we should team, right? Keep together in groups just in case?”
pink cheered, “that way we can keep an eye on at least one other!”
that… wasn’t a bad idea.
Everyone seemed to agree with the idea. But who would be with
who? Everyone seemed to partner up quickly.
much to my own disappointment they even grouped into threes, leaving me on my
own. But I had a feeling as to why.
“oh yellow!” lime waved from her spot over to me, beckoning for me to follow.
Well… what could the harm be exactly?
